Referee faints at the end of 1st half

The incident occurred in the 49th minute of the match when Guatemalan assistant referee Humberto Panjoj, stationed on the sun-drenched side of the field, fainted.

The match, which began at 5 p.m., was played under sweltering conditions with feels-like temperatures nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels above 50 percent.

Canada’s goalkeeper, Maxime Crpeau, was the first to notice Panjoj’s distress, immediately signaling for medical assistance.

Medical personnel quickly responded, and Panjoj was stretchered off the field to applause from the concerned crowd.

Despite the alarming situation, Panjoj was able to stand before being placed on the stretcher, providing some reassurance to the players and fans.

The game resumed after Panjoj was substituted and the teams emerged from the tunnel for the second half.

Players complaining of game conditions

The extreme heat not only impacted this match but has also affected other players in the tournament.

Earlier in the week, Uruguay defender Ronald Aurajo had to leave the field during his team’s 3-1 victory over Panama due to similar heat-related issues.

Aurajo reported feeling dizzy and experiencing a drop in blood pressure, which was attributed to dehydration.

As the 2024 Copa Amrica continues, the grueling summer heat in various U.S. cities remains a significant factor, affecting both players and officials.

The tournament, featuring top teams from South and North America, has captivated global audiences, with Argentina and Brazil leading the charge.

Argentina, fresh from their 2022 World Cup victory and as defending Copa America champions, have set high expectations, while Brazil remains a strong contender despite a draw in their opening game.

The health and safety of all participants will undoubtedly remain a priority as the competition progresses, especially under such challenging weather conditions.
