Papua New Guinea landslide impacts 7,900 people as hope for survivors dims

Thousands of people in northern Papua New Guinea were in need of shelter or aid after a landslide swept over their villages, burying residents and homes. Hopes of finding survivors dimmed in the Pacific island nation, as unstable terrain and a collapsed bridge hampered the search.

Nearly 7,900 people — many younger than 16 — were affected, the United Nations said Tuesday, including residents near the disaster zone who may have to evacuate and those in need of food, clothing and medicine.
