England fans ask the King for a 'Bank Holiday' if they win Euro 2024

A petition has been circulating for fans to push for an extra Bank Holiday if England emerges victorious in Euro 2024. The petition is gaining momentum ahead of Sunday’s final, and supporters are being encouraged to sign it.

Following a thrilling victory over the Netherlands, England secured their spot in the final showdown in Berlin. The Three Lions staged a remarkable comeback, with Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins finding the back of the net. Kane leveled the score by converting a penalty after a controversial VAR review, while Watkins sealed the deal with a brilliant goal in the 90th minute.

The match was not without its share of drama, as referee Felix Zwayer awarded England a penalty after reviewing Denzel Dumfries‘ challenge on the England captain. This decision sparked controversy, with a Dutch legend expressing discontent and suggesting that the German referee should be ‘blacklisted’.

As England gears up to face Spain in the Final, there is much at stake for the team. Manager Gareth Southgate and the players stand to receive substantial bonuses if they clinch the Euros. Additionally, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to commemorate the victory if England triumphs.

What is a ‘Bank Holiday’ in the UK?

A bank holiday is a national public holiday in the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies, and it’s also a colloquial term for a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. In the UK, the term encompasses all public holidays, whether established by law, declared by royal proclamation, or recognized by common law. In contrast, in the Republic of Ireland, some bank holidays are not considered public holidays.

The term “bank holiday” originates from the practice of banking institutions closing for business on these days, a tradition that dates back to certain saint’s days.

What does the petition made by the English fans say?

The petition reads: “Your Majesty, With England so close to achieving greatness on Sunday, I couldn’t be prouder of the team, and I know the nation feels the same. This summer, I blessed Budweiser beers with the winning spirit of 1966 to inspire England to bring it Home again. Now, England are on the verge of making history.

“As the last surviving member of the ’66 starting XI, I can’t tell you how incredible it would be to see England win again. But this moment isn’t just about the team. It’s about England fans across the nation. And as the Official Beer of England, Budweiser is campaigning for a Bank Holiday to allow the fans to celebrate together.

“Should England win, I respectfully ask Your Majesty to grant this Bank Holiday on Monday 15th July. Let’s give every fan across this great nation the chance to properly toast the joint Champions of Europe. Yours hopefully, Sir Geoff Hurst.”
