Ashlyn Harris and her support for partner Sophia Bush

Ashlyn Harris expressed great admiration for her partner, Sophia Bush, after she came out as queer. The 38-year-old former footballer re-shared a photo of Bush on the latest cover of Glamour on her Instagram story on Friday, accompanied by the words: “I’m so proud of you, baby.”

In the image, the actress is shown using her hands to cover her bare chest, wearing only a brown leather jacket. The cover included the quote: ‘I feel like I can finally breathe’, taken from Bush’s moving essay for the magazine.

In her essay, the ‘One Tree Hill’ star explained that she approached Ashlyn Harris while going through the painful process of her divorce from her now ex-husband, Grant Hughes, to whom she was married for only a year. While Bush was facing the end of her marriage, Harris was also going through her own separation from her wife, Ali Krieger.

These shared experiences brought them closer together when they began attending the same support group. “I didn’t expect to find love in this supportive environment,” the 41-year-old wrote. “I don’t know how else to put it other than: I didn’t see it until I saw it.

“And I think it’s very easy not to notice something that’s been in front of you for a long time when you’ve never considered it as an option, and you’ve never been considered as an option.” Although the couple were deeply in love, Bush shared that the situation quickly turned “ugly” when allegations of infidelity surfaced, which Harris vehemently denied at the time.

“Those who claimed I left my ex because I suddenly realised I wanted to be with women: my partners have known my preferences for a long time (so that’s not true, sorry!),” she wrote. “The idea that I ended my marriage based on a made-up date (which, to be clear, never happened) instead of spending over a year facing the most heartbreaking job of my life?” she continued. “Instead of realising that I had to be more vulnerable than ever, even in a public setting, despite being terrified to the core?”

Despite the opinions of others online, Bush shared that the situation left her even more “blown away” by Harris’ “unrelenting integrity” and her dedication to her children – Sloane, 3, and Ocean, 1. “The way she prioritises and places her children, not only in her life but at the centre of her being, is something that truly touches me,” Bush wrote.

She added: “Seeing Ashlyn not only choose to survive, but to thrive, for the sake of her children has been one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed in a friend. And now I get to love her. How lucky am I?”
