He is co-owner of Botafogo, who is first place in the Campeonato Brasileiro Srie A, Brazil’s top soccer division. However, his club lost 4-3 in a dramatic match after holding a 3-0 lead over second place Palmeiras in the first half.
Who is John Textor?
Textor was born in Missouri in 1965, and earned his wealth through the technology industry, eventually becoming nicknamed “Hollywood’s Virtual Reality Guru.” Textor’s net worth is estimated to be around $250 million.
He used his tech enterprises to invest in the sports world, launching streaming platform FuboTV and investing in several large soccer clubs under Eagle Football Holdings, including Crystal Palace, Olympique Lyon, and his beloved Botafogo.
Along the way, he has managed to dispel the stereotype that businessmen who buy into the ownership of soccer clubs don’t care about their team’s success. In particular, American businessmen who own soccer teams, such as the Kroenkes at Arsenal and the Glazers at Manchester United, have developed a bad reputation.
Textor called out Brazilian Football President for corruption
Textor was particularly upset about the red card given to Botafogo’s Adryelson in the 76th minute. They were up 3-1 with less than 15 minutes left, but conceded three times after going down to 10 men.
“The whole world saw it, that is not a red card. He got the ball first,” Textor said, live on Brazilian television after the match. “It is not a red card. He changed the game.”
“This is corruption. This is a theft. Please fine me Ednaldo but you need to resign tomorrow morning,” he said, turning his ire toward Ednaldo Rodrigues, President of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
Top Brazilian youth prospect Endrick, who has been monitored closely by Real Madrid and other top clubs, scored twice in the comeback. Murilo Cerqueira secured the winner in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
