Giants center John Michael Schmitz exits preseason finale with ankle injury

Giants center John Michael Schmitz exited Saturday night’s preseason finale against the Jets in the first quarter with an ankle injury.

After the game – a Jets’ 10-6 win – head coach Brian Daboll did not have any information on the severity of the injury and that the center will have an MRI on Sunday.

Schmitz was playing in the game because he “needed it,” Daboll said after the second-year man missed time and repetitions in practice during the preseason due to a shoulder injury.

He appeared to sustain the injury on the final play of Big Blue’s opening offensive drive when it looked like he got rolled up on from behind after he was stonewalled and driven backward on a 4th-and-1 run play from the Jets’ 12-yard line.

The play went for no gain to end the 11-play drive with a turnover on downs.

Schmitz was later ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The Giants – nor the Jets for that matter – were not playing most of their starters, with Schmitz the only member of the starting offensive line to feature.
