Adios HH: Héctor Herrera era ends at Houston Dynamo FC

HOUSTON – Héctor Herrera’s time with the Houston Dynamo FC has ended.

The MLS club announced the departure of its Designated Player following the end of its 2024 season. The club announced its end-of-season roster decisions on Wednesday, including declining the 2025 option on Herrera’s contract.

Herrera signed with the Dynamo in March 2022 on a deal through the 2024 season, with an option for 2025. He made his MLS debut in the summer of 2022 after completing his contract in Spain with Atlético Madrid.

Herrera’s MLS journey has been filled with ups and downs, partly due to injuries.

The Mexican international had some adaptation difficulties in his first season. He played only ten matches and registered one assist as the Dynamo failed to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs for a fifth consecutive season. Herrera went on to play for Mexico at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making his third appearance in the international tournament.

In the 2023 season, Herrera had a standout season, and he was named a Best XI selection. He registered 17 assists and scored four goals, helping Houston return to the playoffs and make a run to the Western Conference Final. During the year, ‘HH’ was also instrumental in the team’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup run, which culminated with the club’s second title.

Herrera’s third season with the team came with different challenges. After missing the start of the season due to a preseason injury treatment, the Dynamo captain struggled to consistently meet the high expectations set for a player of his caliber and paycheck.

Through three seasons in MLS, Herrera made 69 appearances and recorded six goals with 23 assists. He played a pivotal role in the Dynamo’s resurgence under GM Pat Onstad and head coach Ben Olsen, including their 2023 U.S. Open Cup victory.
