Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt reportedly set to purchase British soccer team

Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are reportedly set to team up in the purchase of West Bromwich Albion F.C. — a second tier English soccer club competing in the EFL Championship — according to Gary Morton, the CEO of Boing Boing Group.

Morton took to Twitter on Sunday to claim Mahomes and Hunt are preparing to finalize a deal. Chris Lepkowski, a former Birmingham Mail journalist, responded to the news with “interesting.”

“Clarke Hunt & Patrick Mahomes incoming,” Morton tweeted. “Deal will conclude within a week, apparently.”

Many users on X, formerly known as Twitter, were quick to point out Morton’s credibility, which he attempts to protect with a safe answer to doubts regarding his sources.

“Agree. I am just repeating what I am told mate,” Morton replied to a fan saying he wouldn’t believe the news until it’s official. “It’s from someone who tends not to say things if there is not a certain ring of surety. So yeah, it’s genuine info, but whether it’s accurate is another matter.”

Can Mahomes and Hunt really purchase West Brom Albion?

Current majority shareholder of West Brom Albion, Guochuan Lai, is unpopular amongst the fans and a buyout is expected sooner rather than later, but whether or not it’ll be a Mahomes-Hunt ownership remains to be seen.

Hunt already owns a Major League Soccer (MLS) team, FC Dallas, and Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, is the co-owner of the Kansas City Current, a team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

American sports stars purchasing soccer clubs in Europe is becoming more prevalent, with some recent owners including retired NFL defensive end J.J. Watt and legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are currently in the middle of the 2023 NFL season with a record of 6-2 following a win abroad (Germany) over the Miami Dolphins.
